Author BK Trooper

Here at Beats From Scratch, a division of Arsenal Productions, we’re all about creating a new sound for artists to complete their projects. We specialize in good quality production for artists looking to gain market exposure and expand their fan base.  Our Hip-Hop, Rhythm and Blues, Pop and Reggae instrumentals have a New York/East Coast sound, where Hip-Hop was originated.  Instrumentals are found on our website. Here you will find quality productions from our staff, available for sale/lease for all projects, artists, TV & Film and websites.

I remember a time when its was hard to find quality beats for my songs, I even had producers in our group that was acting like there beats were only good for their hard drives, lol.  Hip-Hop leases were way more expensive starting at around $100-150, for a basic lease.  That’s why at BFS you can buy/lease quality beats starting as low as $19.99 for your music production needs.  For hip-hop beats/lease options, custom tracks and exclusive rights feel free to hit me up on the contact page and I will respond to all inquiries as soon as I am available.

To buy or lease Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, and Reggae instrumentals for your project, commercial or website go to www.beatsfromscratch.com Click on Featured Beats page, add the track(s) you want to buy or lease, then click buy now.  Complete your transaction through PayPal.  You will receive an e-mail with a link to download your track(s).  After you record your hit song(s) feel free to send me a copy to post on my featured artists page.

Professional Studio vs. Home (Project) Studio

SAM_0213As an unsigned artist or band, you have many decisions to make about your music career. One of the dilemmas you’re faced with is whether to record your demo in a professional recording studio or a home studio. If budget is the determining factor for your decision, you may lean towards a home studio, but wonder if you’re sacrificing quality for affordability. Even if you could afford the higher cost of a professional studio, you don’t want to pay more than you have to either. So how do you make the right decision?

Let’s examine the pros and cons of each.

Professional Recording Studio

-Top quality equipment and acoustics
-Professional and qualified producers and sound engineers guaranteed
-Separation of areas (vocal booth, live band area, sound room)
-Great for live instruments and bands

-More expensive

Home (Project) Studio

-More affordable
-Great for vocal recording
-Will cater to your specific project

-Usually not geared for live instruments or bands
-Quality of equipment and acoustics vary
-Quality of producers and sound engineers vary

The bottom line is a professional recording studio guarantees top quality results for all types of recordings. While a home studio is more affordable, quality may vary and they’re best suited for vocal recording. It all comes down to your specific goals and expectations for your finished product. For example, if you’re only recording vocals over a beat you may want to consider a home studio. Just be sure to shop around and inquire about previous projects done to ensure quality. However, if you’re a live band with vocalists you may want to consider a professional studio. They are more geared towards your specific type of recording. That is not to say that there aren’t any home studios that can record live instruments or bands. They are just harder to find. At the end of the day, it is ultimately a decision that must provide your best interests. Consider all of your options and choose wisely.

The PreSonus 16.02 Overview

presonusBK Trooper signing in once again. I purchased the PreSonus 16.02 in December of 2012. This is the smallest and newest model of the PreSonus brand. They also have larger 24 and 32 channel mixers. So if you need more than 16 inputs get the larger mixers.

The PreSonus is the best purchase I made so far and I could not be any happier. This mixer is compact, powerful and simply amazing. This mixer makes my life so much easier. Traveling with the PreSonus to gigs is effortless. Plus you do not have to carry around racks of effects, processors, limiters and other equipment. You don’t even need to purchase them. See PreSonus was ahead of the game when they launched this mixer, because it comes with EQ’s, effects, limiters and gates on every channel.

Most fire wire mixers come with 8 inputs. This is a 16-channel mixer with 12 microphone inputs. 8 mono inputs, 8 stereo inputs, it’s outstanding. Also 50 preset on each effect, auxiliary 1 and 2 for busing. 2 Fire wire connections to your computer so there is no latency during recording, listening from the playback straight from the mixer. So you can now go in your digital audio workstation (DAW), and change it from 32 bit to 64 bit, awesome. It also comes with software’s Capture and Studio One. Capture is a 2-click process to record your live shows, then go home and mix it later, which is great. On top of that Studio One has Melodyne integration for pitch correction. PreSonus is all about making your workflow efficient and I am becoming sold on most of their products.

The PreSonus is really made for live shows, but is also very good for home studio recordings. When you do shows, all you need is a microphone, laptop and some speakers and you’re good to go. Don’t have your back up singers, fine just load up your backing tracks, lovely. With nice soft touch buttons that light up and 60 mm faders, this sleek blue mixer is easy to fall in love with. You can’t find a mixer at this price with this many features. Some of the most expensive mixers will not give you all of the features you get with this mixer. It is currently going for $1,299.00, but if you go to Guitar Center and give them your email address after making a purchase, they will send you coupons online that will bring down the price. The best time to purchase your PreSonus is around a holiday weekend with your online coupon. I got mines for $999.99 after using the coupon in addition to the holiday sale.

When I purchased it I was intimidated buy the front panel. I thought it was going to be a long learning curve, but actually it was not. The only negative I have is you cannot side chain the 16.02 and there is no sub- grouping or no inserts. BK Trooper signing out.

The MPC 5000 Music Production Center

SAM_0222The MPC brand is a well-known drum machine. Over the years, it has become the number one choice for hip-hop and R&B. I used to own a MPC 2000 XL and a MPC 1000. I currently own a MPC 5000 that I use to make my beats.

When the MPC 5000 launched it was a bit out of my budget, so I was forced to purchase the 1000. The MPC 5000 is black, sexy, with a smooth surface and tons of features. I am still discovering features to date. I have watched many tutorials. None of them cover all features available or show you everything in detail. Some of my upcoming videos will cover features step by step. I will also provide more tips and secrets about other equipment in my studio.

The MPC is on a level of its own, for the simple fact that it is a complete production tool. The added features of synth programs, hard disk recording with sixteen vintage mpc pads, 4 q-link sliders and 8 knobs, gives you full control at your finger tips. The note-repeat, function that is notorious on all MPC’s, and the multi –track sequencer is packed with a knockout punch for all my hip-hop instrumentals. Although the MPC 5000 is packed with features, its sampling and editing capabilities are off the charts. It also comes fully loaded with drum, synth, keys, strings, bass sounds and more.

Its connectivity is fabulous with two XLR microphone inputs, eight outputs, midi ins and outs, and USB to computer. The memory is good, but you might want to upgrade to the expansion pack.

The MPC 5000 is the perfect tool for a new producer, because you can wait on getting an expensive keyboard. If you owned a previous version of the MPC, the learning curve is only on the newest features, so just plug and play. Although it is not one of the newest models, it’s my favorite instrument to use in my music production.
