Starting your own home studio can be challenging and very costly. The major questions are where do I begin and what do I need? If you’re venturing into this territory as a beginner, these are valid questions. That’s why planning and budgeting is essential. You need to know the purpose of your home studio to draw up an action plan. Once you figure out your purpose (i.e. recording artists, producing betas, etc.) you have to determine your budget. Knowing what you can afford before you even think about stepping into a Guitar Center or other music store in your area will save you a lot of money. Let’s face it. When you love music like I do, going into Guitar Center is like sending a kid into a candy store. You see it all, want it all, but can’t buy it all.
This is why your budget is so important. As a beginner, there are so many different options to choose from and you may equate quality to a higher sales price. Therefore, you have to figure out what key items are required to build your home studio. I have come up with several key items for first timers to help them through the process.
#1 PC or Mac (preferred) Desktop or Laptop
Mac is the preferred computer for studio recording and music production. If this is not an affordable option for you, PC can get the job done as well.
#2 Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, etc.
#3 Audio Interface
MBOX is the most popular brand audio interface and they offer affordable options.
#4 Microphone with Stand
Condenser microphone with a pop filter is recommended for good quality recordings.
Rokit Pro Speakers
#6 Track Board/Recorder

You can build a booth or soundproof your room or closet
The key items listed above are the basics that most home studios require. Depending on your unique requirements, you may need to drop or add items on this list.
There are many great music stores out there. I personally like going to Guitar Center. Their staff provides expert knowledge and great customer service. In addition, they will show you options based on your purpose and your budget and you will be up and running in no time. The main goal is to make sure you get what you need and stay within your budget.
